Among the things you can do with your time are take in information, give out information, and make things. Taking in information is more appealing than when we grew up, because there's more of it readily available and it's better sorted. So we do more of that.

Which would be fine. Except our standards of what information is interesting enough to be worth our time were developed before there was so much of it.
