How did I miss this?

Was there some time-space warp that I never played Four Square when I was a kid? Watching the folks at Sudbury Valley play it (where Zach had his first 'visiting week' of school this week) made me wish I were 10 again.

Sudbury Valley… I envy Zach. I wish I could have gone to school in that type of school environment when I was growing up.

Four Square was one of the few enjoyable parts of elementary-school recess, partly because I did not actually suck at it. We had house rules that made it more interesting, though: two-handed and overhand shots were legal, and the server got to change the rules. Changing the rules meant permitting or prohibiting things like putting spin on the ball, tossing it up before returning it, etc., and stayed in effect until the server was out.

It is possible to lose, however: if the other players decide to gang up on you and get you out immediately every time you come into the game, as happened to me occasionally.

Wow, I think I missed that one, too. Can't wait until Gwen is old enough to play, though.

Maybe it's a NJ thing? I never played four square until I moved up to MA to go to boarding school for my last two years of high school.

How is Zach liking the school? I wish it was a little closer to us.

now we'll have to ask the other NJ people, huh?

SVS is, i think, going to be terrific for Zach. It's probably worth checking out for Isaac as well - 45 minute drive for you to framingham?

Actually, the last time I played four-square was in NJ, at a UU young-adult conference in Summit where there happened to be a four-square court.

They started a Sudbury school near us in Woodstock. IF we don't go the Homeschool route for some reason it is one of the possible schools (we have a LARGE # of really good alt schools near us).

Well we played it in Maine and Ohio growing up. Though overhand and closed fist shots were allowed.

I grew up playing four-square in TN, but like hopscotch, it was a "girl game." The boys played kickball. I don't recall the rules, unfortunately, but it couldn't have been difficult because I occasionally advanced to the 3rd or 4th square. When I moved to VA, there were four-square grids painted on the playground's blacktop but no one ever wanted to play.
