penkIt's been more than 3 months, and every once in a while, it just comes up and kicks me in the teeth.
This weekend it caught me while Don (my father in law), Zach, and I were driving down to Rochester, NH to pick up a new cable box. We were listening to Car Talk on the radio, while Zach sort of idled along a little spacy in the back seat. At the begining of the show, Bob and Ray like to tell a joke. This one was a pretty good one about a fellow wanting to build a bridge to Hawaii.
They went through the story, it had a good chuckling punchline and we all laughed. I followed the normal path I do when I hear a joke I like. I reached for the cell phone to call my dad.

Tears, quiet, hurt. I didn't want to tell Don what had just happened, I don't think I could explain it. This was something very private to me. Zach barely knew my father, so the only person who knew what was going on was me.
He wasn't there anymore.
I turned to the window, wept quietly, and we drove on back to the house.
