And so the summer begins. Today was the first day of open pickup volleyball in Framingham. Zach and I made it over there just after the net was set up, and I ended up playing a little over 2 hours - perhaps 7 games total, 3 on 3.

I haven't played a full game since last October-ish, when the days were getting too short to get in a good game. I've kept very active during the winter with hiking and bikeriding whenever possible, so I was curious how that would pan out today.

In short - it was better. I'm in much better shape than I was end of last summer - leg muscle tone is very good, though I'm still a little heavier around the middle than I like. Physical last week chalked me at 246lbs (I asked the Dr what my last physical, 2 years before reported, he said 263. I know I spiked up higher than that in the interim). I played strong through all the games until it was getting late, and played better than I had before, I think. Up on my toes, crouched for the servers, jumping and stretching for the hard shots - and my ball handling skills are getting better. I muffed 2-3 sets, but every time I was set -to-, I made the shot, and placed the ball where I wanted. There were no completely ridiculous wild shots this time, which felt great.

I'm looking forward to playing more, but I have to say...

OMG am I sore. Muscles that don't get used during biking and hiking are going "WHAT THE HELL are you DOING?" - particularly along the top of my thighs. I was quite sweaty and dripping by the end of the night, but not -dead- on my feet. I could probably play another hour before dropping, but it was getting late and Zach was getting restless.

Felt damned good.
