Urges.

I have them a lot. Spontaneous wishes. Sometimes incredibly strong. A common theme is music.

Today's urge came on like gangbusters, and isn't a new one. While listening to Radioparadise, the totally masterful piece "Birdland by Weather Report came on.

I stopped playing in the band about a month ago, so I don't have my fill of (as close as we got) to organized music. But listening to the keyboard riffs, the bass runs, and the soft, subtle guitar lead in Birdland brought out that "I COULD DO THIS! I just... need... to stop doing everything else, and learn! Aaargggh!" feeling.

Now I want (slightly faded, but still percolating around) to drop everything, retire to a mountaintop somewhere with a guru, and immerse myself in understanding music theory and practice for a few years. Guitar and keyboards first, then apply that knowledge elsewhere. Unlearn all the bad habits I have on the flute, and relearn it, and maybe, just maybe, learn to play fiddle.

Not going to happen, I know. But the urges continue...

Did you see my post about a friend who's looking to form a band in the area?

Hey

C: You should fix your song virus fixed by going to see Thomas Dolby on 9/24 at Harpers Ferry. :)

S: I hear ya on that mountain top. One of the things that I need to have in order to practice is privacy. I hate practicing for an audience; gigs are for everyone else, practice is for *me* so that gigs for *them* don't suck!! However, my roommate and I have the same schedules and she never goes anywhere socially, so the only times I can practice alone are in my car. This means I get some singing practice, but not really much of it, and not much else at all.

The good news is, I recently found a place (in the city!) where I can park my nini-van and there really aren't any people near. Therefore I can drag my guitar out and practice there, hopefully undisturbed. Keyboards are harder given that I don't want to have multiples anymore and I really don't wanna pull the home one out of the computer rack repeatedly or buy an inverter so I can power it a la Dodge. I'm looking forward to testing out my new music space. I hope you find a similar "place" for music in your life.

And, the sad reason a lot of people will be dusting off their old Weather Report albums....
