As part of reworking some insurance stuff, I got to have an entire blood workup, soup to nuts....

Cut for those who really don't give a hoot...

It's quite a list, to be sure, I'll give you the highlights...

HIV, HEP-B, HEP-C, all negative

Cholesterol: 173
HDL Cholesterol ('good cholesterol') : 37.60
LDL Cholestrerol ('bad cholestrerol') : 110.60

According to webmd, these are good numbers. Considering I eat like crap, I'm pretty happy with this. :)

Triglycerides: 124
Webmd also thinks this is good. High levels here would mean I'm going way too heavy on the fats, and at risk of diabetes.

My NP, however, did mention I had a 'fatty liver' - which looking at the tests, an AST (SGOT) level seems to show that. So even though there's no other indicators, I'm probably still overdoing it on fatty foods. Yay being an american!

I'm working pretty hard to switch around my physical activity level - I've been too sedentary and eating too much junk the last 2 years (and in a heap of stress as well) - I'm sure those have not helped. Working to fix that now.

So, not dead yet!

High triglycerides are correlated with high consumption of refined carbs (grain and sugar), and (somewhat less so) with your impending risk of metabolic syndrome, not with one's consumption of dietary fats.

"Fatty liver" also has nothing to do with dietary fat. It has EVERYTHING to do with fructose consumption. Fructose, like alcohol but unlike other sugars, is metabolized by the liver, and our evolution did not contemplate anything like the amount of fructose in the standard American diet. (Remember that sucrose is half fructose, most HFCS is around 55 percent).

If you want mind-numbing levels of further detail on any or all of this, holler.

Yay not-dead yet!

I am also not-dead yet. I even left the house for a little bit tonight. But now I go to sleep to see if I continue to be not-dead tomorrow so I can come out and help you.

What they all said, actually. It seems that some people tolerate HFCS better than others, but enough of it will give anyone fatty liver. I've done my best to reduce my intake (eliminating it entirely is remarkably difficult; it's everydamnwhere).

So, glad you're not even near death, at least by the numbers :-)

From what I can find, it has a lot to do with obesity/overweight issues and/or alcohol consumption, and not dietary fats.
Did the dr say whether it was NAFLD or not?
