Another music meme.
Nov. 11th, 2003 02:54 pmI don't know if these guys have the staying power, some of the other tracks I've heard haven't gripped me too hard, but this one piece (which I finally got an mp3 of) is wonderful.
Bring me to Life" by Evanescence is intense, beautiful, just really blows me away. Amy Lee, the lead singer (who is apparently the partner of the lead guitarist) has such an intense range... particularly in this song where there's so much strength behind her lyrics (which she wrote, btw). At first blushj, the lyrics come across as typical angstful goth blatherings, but her vocals make them come alive and give them meaning.
That's probably a bad attempt a poeticism, but you get the idea. If you don't have the album or haven't heard it, there's a link on the page (under 'Music') that has RealAudio samples of the album, including this track.... unfortunately, it's the commercial 'slice' of the piece, which really doesn't do it justice.

Re: Goth?
Date: 2003-11-11 03:45 pm (UTC)Couple references:
. Evanescence member Ben Moody was quoted recently in Entertainment
. Weekly as saying, "We're actually high on the Christian charts, and
. I'm like, What the f*** are we even doing there?"
(this is from http://www.actwin.com/OtR/month.200304/msg00371.html )
It looks like their publisher (Wind-Up) is active in the Christian market, adn the band knew that, but I don't feel the band is a "Christian Rock" band.
And hey, you can't argue with online polling:

Re: Goth?
Date: 2003-11-11 04:25 pm (UTC)Theres this:
This comes in contrast to past comments made by Moody. In Fallen's liner notes, he thanks (among others) Jesus Christ, saying, "All the life left in me is you." In an interview given to Stranger Things Magazine in 2002, Moody states, "The message we as a band want to convey more than anything is simple - God is Love."
From their website:
Is Evanescence a christian band?
Evanescence band members are christians, but the band is not a "christian band", just a rock band. Plain and simple.
and this:
Fallen was certified platinum.
Evanescence were doing well on the Christian charts until the group made it known that they didn't want to be lumped into the Christian music scene. Fallen had topped the Billboard Top Contemporary Christian Albums chart before Christian record stores began removing the band's LP. Moody had stated about the groups stance on being viewed as a 'Christian band': "...Amy and I are Christians, but we are not a Christian band. We write about a number of things, just things we experience in life. Because our spirituality is a big part of our lives, it comes through in our music. But our lives are our ministry. Our music is just a way for us to convey the message to those who listen that they are not alone."
So yeah, now they are "not" a christian band (?)
But I think maybe they protest too much.....
Certainly, you can make the call!
